Kavachams are extremely invaluable in Sanskrit literature. The Kavachams please our Ishta dev, persuading him to come to our aid whenever we are in trouble. Some popular Kavachams are the Narayana Kavach, Devi Kavach, Shiva Kavach and so on. You may find our video on the Benefits of Narayana Kavach helpful.
The Shiva Kavach is Swayam Siddha, its benefits manifest right after the first recitation. The prefix Amogh means unerring or unfailing. Quite true to its name, the Amogh Shiva Kavacham always achieves its purpose, never missing its aim. The specialty of the Kavacham is that we don’t need to keep a yantra, deity, or lingam of Lord Shiva by our side.
Origin of the Amogh Shiva Kavacham
We simply need an asana and devotion in our hearts to start with our recitation. The Amogh Shiva Kavacham is present in the twelfth Brahmothara chapter of Skanda Purana. It is a part of a dialogue between Sage Rishabhdev and a prince named Bhadraayu.
Prince Bhadraayu and his mother were driven out of their kingdom by enemies. Out of compassion, the seer taught him the confidential Shiva Kavach by the virtue of which the prince regained his lost kingdom and splendor. Kavach means armor or a protective shield.
Just as a warrior endures an onslaught with the help of his armor, a sadhaka withstands the blows of life by the virtue of a Kavacham. He comes out of his present predicament and stays protected by the grace of his Ishta Devata.

The Shiva Kavacham protects us from Bhoota, Preta and Pisachas
Since Lord Shiva is the Lord of destruction, he doesn’t allow the disturbing elements of nature to disrupt our lives. As a result, one does not encounter Bhoota, Preta, Pishach, Dakinis and other deadly categories of ghosts. Lord Shiva ensures our safety at all times averting untimely death and future mishap. If an enemy has evil designs against you, he forgets his plan of action at the time of executing it.
The powerful recitation deafens the minds of enemies with their own thoughts and confuses them, resulting in the reciter’s victory. We can chant it once daily or as we feel inspired.
Just as a balm relieves the pain of the afflicted organ, the powerful Shiv Kavach rectifies our personal, professional, and social lives, by either removing incompatible persons or by transforming them. The hymn calms the mind, improving mental clarity and focus.
The Amogh Shiva Kavacham relieves us from all kinds of Stress
It helps individuals cope with stress by riveting our focus on the auspicious form and qualities of Lord Shiva. As we invoke the various names and forms of the Lord as given in the Kavach, our mind gets subtle and pure.
A child seeks protection from his parents, not from a stranger. So when we consider Lord Shiva as our guardian and seek his protection, he is happy to help. However, one should never try to subjugate or bind him through occult means. This mentality of gaining control over the Lord is extremely detrimental for devotional seekers.
Reading the Shiva Kavacham in front of a Temple Shiva Lingam is a Powerful Practice
Those who want to please Lord Shiva, should visit a Shiva temple every morning, and offer water and Bel leaves on the Shiva linga. Thereafter, if the Pujari permits, sit in a quiet corner of the temple and recite the Amogh Shiva Kavach, in the presence of Lord Shiva. We cannot describe the peace that follows in words. This practice completely changes our perception of the world, forming a deep connection with Lord Shiva.
Bhakti and Vairagya increase by leaps and bounds. One gets addicted to this practice and waits for the next morning to visit the temple and recite this powerful Kavach.
Spiritual Work is a Technology
It would rather be inconceivable to gain benefits mentioned above simply by chanting powerful Kavachams such as the Amogh Shiva Kavacham. Every spiritual process has a technology behind it, just as every benefit that Science provides us today, has a powerful scientific principle behind it. When we take up a sadhana of a deity, we have to understand that the deity is the governing principle of the universe.
Philosophy of Gaining from Divine Works
Our current state is impure, filled with thoughts and emotions which are non-conducive to Bhakti. We may have a desire to perform Bhakti, no doubt, but we do not have the direct means to get rid of the disturbances of the mind, which thwarts the energy of prayer. Also, we are not in a position to be fixed on our Dharmic principles.
A Kavacham or a Stotra or a Nama can only deliver us from the trials and tribulations of life, only when we are established in the fundamentals of Dharma. We shall not be able to acquire these Dharmic Values by simply chanting mantras or Scriptures, because the mind is enmeshed in the mire of materialism. It becomes mandatory then to approach a person who is beyond such afflictions and follow the path laid by such an individual who is not attached to a following, name, fame, wealth or women.
Importance of the Sat-Guru
Such an individual is the Sat-Guru, a God-Realized Individual. But the question is how can we know whether the individual whom we are approaching is genuine? The simple answer, Shastras reveal, is that first we approach Bhagawan with a simple mind to attain Guru. Depending on our innermost core-sincerity we get a Guru of that calibre as a blessing and then through that Guru we attain Bhagawan.

Thus it is important to read Kavachams, Stotrams and Mantras under the able guidance of a God-realized Guru. This is the right methodology to approach any Mantra, Kavacham or Stotram. We have to resist the whims and fancies of the mind, whose only goal, as per the laws of Maya, is to confuse us. Only a genuine sadhaka under the auspices of a God-realized Guru can eventually attain the ultimate benefits of any Divine work.
