The historic reference to the Chamundaye mantra is that Devi got the name Chamunda after She slayed the demons Chanda and Munda.

Procedure 1 for doing the Chamundaye Viche Mantra Sadhana
Now, I shall share the two procedures of chanting the mantra.
The first procedure involves physical Seva –
The seeker should first take a bath and wear light-coloured clothes. The ideal time to chant this mantra is brahma Muhurta or the celestial hours between 3-6 A.M. In front of you place the photo of Devi. You can place the Mahishasuramardhini photo of Devi and keep a folded red cloth under the photo for best results.
The colour red holds a great significance in Devi Sadhana.
It matches the colour of Kumkum, or Sindur, which represent the feminine dimension. Light a ghee lamp in front of you, next to the photo. The wick of the lamp should face the direction of the Sun, East during day and West during Evening. Also, light a sweet-smelling incense stick to add to the ambience.
Meditate for a few minutes on the divine form of Devi.
Keep Kumkum powder by your side to apply on the photo of Devi. Make a nice paste of the Kumkum by adding some water to it. Then, with every chant, with your ring finger apply the Kumkum on Devi’s feet 108 times. You can use a counter to keep a check of the number count.
The Goddess is more pleased with the purity of heart rather than mere ritual. So do not forget to develop the mood of devotion while chanting, because that is the heart of Sadhana.
Think of her as your child or as your Mother, as you apply the Kumkum with faith and Devotion. This approach shall surely please Durga Devi. Follow this practice for 101 days for top results. We should not do the practice for less than 21 days for some results.
Note that, for these 21 or 101 days one must not consume non-veg or alcohol. One should also avoid sex, during this phase One must not miss a single day of Sadhana. Also, one must sit at the same spot every day at the same time. Ensure that the place is clean and conducive for Sadhana. Towards the end of the Sadhana, you can read Durga Saptashati as a concluding Aarathi.
Procedure 2 for doing the Devi Mantra Sadhana
In the second approach of Sadhana, one can omit the Kumkum Seva and simply chant 5 rounds of mantra every day. One can either use Rudraksha Beads or Beads made of Turmeric for the Sadhana. However the Kumkum Seva that I had described earlier is more rewarding, especially for development of the Mood of Bhakti and solving bigger problems of Life.
Mind you, it is necessary to take mantra initiation from an expert Shakta or a Tantrika Guru who has been practising this mantra for a protracted period of his life and under his direct guidance. Otherwise the mantra is also known to give counter-results.
