It brings together into one whole, the male and female principles, namely Shiva and Shakti. This form is feeds and maintains every living entity that exists within this material universe. The Stotram is a pure spiritual work with ingrained metaphysical connotations

What is the Ardhanarishwara Stotram and its uniqueness

The Ardhanarishwara describes the beautiful combined male and female forms through brilliant Sanskrit poetry, representing the cosmic flow of the metaverse. It has three components. namely ‘Ardha’ (half), ‘Nari’ (woman), and ‘Ishwara’ (Lord). These three aspects combine into one whole and represent the Supreme Being.

The Stotra is not lopsided and equally praises and highlights the value of both the male and female aspects of the Supreme Being. It does not anywhere tilt towards either form, maintaining perfect balance and poise. It is important for the sincere chanter of the Stotram to grasp its deep import and symbolism

Who Composed the Ardhanarishwara Stotram?

The stotram was composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya, the unparalleled Advaita philosopher and sage. Known for his non-dualistic philosophy, Sri Adi Shankara’s spiritual insight does not for a moment separate Shiva and Shakti, a truth he highlights through this hymn.

📜 How did Sri Adi Shankaracharya conceive the Stotram

Scholars say that Sri Adi Shankara composed this stotram during a meditative state. He had returned from a  temple where Sri Ardhanarishwara was enshrined. Seeing the seamless union of the Divine Masculine and Feminine, he broke into a lyrical flow that became the basis of this unparalleled work.

What is the meaning of Ardhanarishwara?

The concept of Ardhanarishwara signifies that Shiva and Shakti cannot be separated Shakti is energy, and Shiva is consciousness. Shiva represents the immobile, eternal Truth, the silent watcher, the base, the resting place of cosmic creation, and the limitless wellspring of creative activities.

1. Which area of your life feels most misaligned or unsettled right now?

The axis of stillness, Bhagawan Shiva, is the center of the universe. Devi Bhagawati, commonly referred to as Shakti, is the dynamic principle and impetus for all activity, transformation, and creation. She is the divine force responsible for the universe’s rotation, pulsation, and evolution.

parvati behind creation

Their union reflects the integrated whole, the fundamental principle of existence. It is only a matter of deep observation when one returns to one’s original nature when one sees that at one’s center is stillness, and it is this stillness alone that manifests movement, and soon movement returns to stillness.

Without Shiva, Shakti would be directionless; without Shakti, Shiva would remain unmanifest, unsaid. This interplay of the unmoving and the moving—of the changeless reality and ever-changing phenomena—is what gives birth to life itself. Philosophically, it conveys that creation can only occur when these two principles unite. Shiva without Shakti is inert; Shakti without Shiva is directionless.

The deity is not a mere amalgamation of male and female counterparts but a profound representation of cosmic balance and oneness. They are two components of the one Supreme Being.

How many verses are in the Ardhanarishwara Stotram?

The Stotram has six powerful verses, and they praise the physical and symbolic aspects of the 2 deities, namely Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati. There is a refrain which goes

“नमः शिवायै च नमः शिवाय,”
which translates to Humble Salutations to Shiva Again and Again

What are Striking Factors of Ardhanarishwara Stotram

There is a very interesting verse in the Stotram which is

“चाम्पेयगौरार्धशरीरकायै कर्पूरगौरार्धशरीरकाय।”

parvati devi and golden champa

The explanation is as follows. Devi Parvati is compared to the golden champa flower, which is one-half part of the Ardhanareeshwara deity, keeping in mind that Devi Parvati is one deity, Lord Shiva is another, and their combined form, the Ardhanaareshwara, is the third deity, the Supreme Being. Lord Shiva is like camphor.

He is extremely fair and radiant, effervescent and pure as camphor, whose aroma fills the atmosphere. The Champaka flower is popular in both the Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The flower is divine and used only for worship of the Lord. We offer this flower to deities during sacred rituals. They represent our offerings of inner refinement and spotless devotion. Just as the Champaka flower represents all that is elevated and pure, Devi represents that very purity and illuminates the world with her benign presence.

Although she spreads her glory in the universe, she remains rooted in truth, Lord Shiva. Nature without the element of truth and integrity can never survive. That is the reason why a person who is rooted in Satya and Dharma can never be harmed by the forces of nature; rather, she cooperates with such a being and inundates him with all her blessings.

The verse concludes with this statement:

“जगज्जनन्यै जगदेकपित्रे नमः शिवायै च नमः शिवाय।।”

The purport of the above statement is that we offer our salutations to the mother and father of the universe. This line is in agreement with the parental affection that is seen to some extent in the material universe, but this love for our spiritual parents, Bhagawan Shiva and Devi Parvati Maa, is beyond any material emotion rooted in spiritual emotions. We all need to evoke it through the reading of the Ardhanareeshwara Stotram.

shiva parvati caring for beings

Both our spiritual parents inundate the universe with their care and nurture, each being from an ant to an elephant, with utter impartiality, just as parents are impartial towards their every child. Shiva and Shakti bless a family that comes together through prayer, love, and understanding, all that the Ardhanareeshwara Stotram stands for. There is an interdependence between the male and the female energies in every aspect of family life.

That is why every member of the family should read this Stotram with Bhakti towards Shiva and Parvati. You may be interested in our video Benefits of Uma Maheswara Stotram | Significance of Uma Maheshwara Stotram.

These verses have nice lyrics and at the same time point to the non-dual philosophy (Advaita Vedanta). In Advaita, the apparent separation between the individual soul and the Supreme dissolves into the realization of Oneness. The stotram reflects this truth by merging Shiva and Shakti into one indivisible form, where the differentiation between male and female dissolves and yet the two roles are maintained distinctively; form and formlessness, energy and consciousness are ultimately illusory.

The female component is the emotional aspect, while the male component is the logical or disciplinary aspect that governs the family. The hymn represents Bhakti (devotional) and Jnana (wisdom) paths, drawing both of these two parts together, Bhakti as the female and Jnana as the male, toward the realization that all is one undivided, eternal Brahman.

spiritual message

Yes, at a deeper level the Stotram balances the male and female aspects of our persona and balances us within, making us equanimous and unbiased. It makes us more amiable to Dharmic values and rakes up our interest towards Spiritual Knowledge. This opens up the gateway towards Self-realization. As I said before all this shall happen only through Grace, for which along with the chanting of the Stotram, presence of the Guru in one’s life is indispensable.

In today’s times all of us have complex thought processes and many of us are unsure of our life-partner preferences. If we are to chant the Ardhanareeshwara Stotram we shall understand what goes on within us, especially when we intend and work towards knowing ourselves.

Talking with the Guru and adhering to the Principles of Seva, Swadhyaya, Satsanga, Satya and Sharanagati should be our priority, along with the chanting of the Ardhanaareshwara Stotram can prove to be a breakthrough in speedening up our spiritual progress and ironing out the kinks within our personality.

5 principles of god realization

With such a mindset we shall be able to look for a right match for ourselves without getting influenced by people who care for us but are ignorant of the spiritual element within each one of us.

Here, one must rely on Guru and our mood towards the great Lord Ardhanareeshwara who empowers us to choose the right match for us and giving us the ideal life partner who shall commit himself/herself towards the same goal towards which we are motivated.

This becomes a 100% valid methodology if and only if, our final goal is spiritual and not directed towards worldly ambitions like money, name or fame, career and all the run-of-the mill goals that an average man sets for himself, which is bound to develop cracks and wither away with the blowing winds of time.

Regular chanting of this stotram instills an awareness of one’s fractured energies and gently integrates them into a single fabric of power and spiritual confidence. The Stotram promotes the sensibilities within relationships, helps resolve emotional instability, and promotes spiritual clarity.

The Ardhanarishwara Stotram is immaculate philosophy. The common man should not simply adopt the mood of reverence but also reflect on his/her behavior, which the Stotram alludes to. For this, one has to carefully practice reciting the Stotram for a few years without breaks. The stotram should not only be merely recited but also contemplated upon, and one must take steps to resolve all inner conflicts.

shiva-shakti

One must confront one’s fears and aspirations and see their worth in one’s life. One should approach the Ardhanareeshwara Devata with a mood of surrender and inquiry. One can harmonize the dualities within oneself through such an approach. Instead of seeing masculinity and femininity as opposites, the reciter of the Stotram must treat them as complementary forces within one’s mind.
