An individual can invoke Devi Durga through the Om Dum Durgayei Mantra. Durga Devi is the consort of Lord Shiva and the mother of Ganesha and Karthikeya.

Symbolism of the Durga Devi Mantra
Holding weapons may seem aggressive. However, sitting on the tiger symbolizes suppression of violent tendencies since the tiger is a carnivorous animal. This means that the goddess wields weapons wisely, only for protecting Dharma. She is like death for the untruthful and a loving mother for a Sanatani.

Dum-Dum is the Beeja mantra of Durga Devi.
Durgayei- She is Durga because she slew the demon named Durg. Durg also means fort. This fort represents the walls of our notions, beliefs and ideologies. We weave our own thought world and feel secure within its fort. This is the greatest obstacle in spiritual growth. When a sapling grows we expose it to the sky. Building a wall over it stunts its growth.
Similarly, the boundaries of our preconceived notions, restrict our freedom. Durga literally means the one who conquers this fort and breaks it. Without the grace of Durga Devi, it is impossible to transcend Samsara. Her benign glance is sufficient for both material and spiritual wellbeing. Apart from Shaktism, even Vaishnavas revere Durga Devi as Mahamaya.
She is the empress of this material world. Without her sanction, not even a leaf can move.
The Intention Behind the Mantra gives Results
Namaha means offering prayers. Durga Devi looks at the mood and intention of the chanter. If you are humble and admit your weaknesses to the deity, the mantra shall be more effective. Now, I shall mention how to chant the Durga Mantra. Follow a Saltvik diet omitting onion and garlic. Fix a time and place for your Sadhana and stick to that for 11 days, 21 days or 41 days. There are no restrictions on dress colour, and one should chant selflessly.
Purity of heart matters. Keep a photo of Durga Devi covered with red choli or red blouse piece on the altar. Apply dots of Lal Chandan with your ring finger for 108 chants on the photo of Devi. First 54 chants apply the Chandan on her feet. Next 54 chants apply it on her forehead.
