THE MURUGAN MANTRA

The Great Saravana Bhavaya Murugan Mantra

The mantra about which we are going to discuss in this video post is Om Saravana Bhavaya Namaha. The literal translation of the word Saravana is ‘A clump of reeds. However, it also refers to Kartikeya, popularly known as Murugan in South India.

Who is Lord Kartikeya or Murugan

Kartikeya has many names such as Skanda, and Subramanya, is the commander-in-chief of the Devatas, He was born with the purpose of vanquishing the demon Tarakasura. The story goes like this-

BENEFITS LORD MURUGAN

Once a demon named Tarakasura tricked Lord Brahma and got the boon that only the son of Lord Shiva could kill him. Tarakasura became proud and troubled innocent creatures. During that period, unfortunately, Lord Shiva was immersed in meditation.

He was yet to marry Parvati Devi. So, the Devatas ordered Kamadeva to disturb Lord Shiva’s meditation and entice him into marrying the goddess. Then the son born from their union shall be able to eliminate Tarakasura. Kamadeva recognized that he was playing with fire but had no option but to obey the gods.

KAMADEVA AND SHIVA

He fired the arrow of love at the Lord’s third eye. Being insulted thus, the Lord’s third eye opened, spewing fire at Kamadeva reducing him into ashes. The gods then pacified Lord Shiva and requested Him to accept Parvati as His consort to which the Lord agreed.

The divine marriage thus took place with great pomp and celebrations. Agni Deva reminded the Lord of the divine task of siring a son.

The Heat of Lord Shiva’s Masculinity

Lord Shiva handed over his semen to Agni but the heat was unbearable even for the Lord of fire. He deposited the fluid in the Ganges.

One cannot even imagine the intensity of the heat. Even the coolest of rivers, goddess Ganga, went into flames. She deposited the semen on a clump of reeds known as Saravana which developed into six babies. The six Kritikas or constellations who were passing by, couldn’t take their eyes off the sons of Shiva.

SKANDA MATA

They sat down to breastfeed the babies and nurse them. When mother Parvati and Lord Shiva came, the six babies became one, universally known as Skanda. Skanda, later slew Tarakasura and relieved the three worlds.
