Mantra Sadhana: Important Points to Consider

THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT TO KNOW

The Failed Purpose of Mantra Sadhana

Most of the Population feels that they can attain whatever they want or can fulfill all their needs by arbitrarily chanting some mantra.

People accept mantras floating on the Internet or by accepting the views of certain influencers, thus going by what they say.

They seek some advice and start chanting mantras.

This is however an extremely flawed approach towards Mantras. Mantras are not meant to be wish-fulfilling, some formula or quick fix for exigencies that life presents before us. This has never been the purpose of Mantras.

The great sages of Yore foresaw that the man of the future will be a self-centered, sense-organ driven being who will be constantly on the lookout for satisfying his material hunger. That is why they had composed hymns and mantra with Phala Shruti (advantages associated with a mantra or hymn) written towards the end of mantric compositions.

But this was merely a bait towards getting mankind to at least chant or recite the Stotrams. Nothing more than that. The sages believed that if the futuristic man atleast resorted to chanting the hymns with a desire of getting some material benefit, they may atleast draw upon them atleast some spiritual benefit which these compositions were pregnant with.

The modern man, however never understood the true purpose of the mantras and never desired anything more than paltry material gains that catered nothing beyond food, clothing, shelter, name, fame and wealth. So, overall the purpose of the sages stands defeated, as of today.

Goal of Mantra Sadhana

The true Goal of Mantra Sadhana except certain Tantric Systems, which are meant for specific material problem solving, are meant only for the attainment of the Absolute.

This is the one-point program of all Mantras.

One may wonder if that were the goal of mantra sadhana then what is the purpose of so many deities and so many mantras. The answer to this is straight-forward although not evident. There are over 7.5 billion human beings in the world today. All these beings, although apparently human in terms of their physicality, are not one in terms of their inner construct.

7.5-BILLION-PEOPLE

Sanatana Dharma is the umbrella under which all of the universe is housed. The Dharma has specific mantras and specific deities for each member of the world family, depending on their inner mood and disposition.

Since no two humans are same, no two deities are similar. There is only one Supreme Being and the deities of Sanatana Dharma are the channel that connect the individual to the Supreme. Each deity has a mantra. Each mantra has a sage too.

When a Guru hands over a mantra to a being and when the being chants the mantra, the power of the Guru, connects the individual to the sage of the mantra and the deity.

The deity then takes the individual to the Supreme Being. The deities, although have different characteristics and suits the individual chanting the mantra, finally, the deity acts as a channel that connects the chanter to the Supreme Being.

Time to Revive Genuine Mantra Sadhana?

Well, it is time that Mantra sadhana process is revived to its prestine glory. We have to understand that the true purpose of Mantra Sadhana can never be material. It is meant only for the spiritual well-being of an individual.

Just as the Lord has already provided for animals, he has already provided for the welfare and maintenance of all humans in terms of adequate food, clothing and shelter.

One should undertsand that this is all that is required in terms of material maintenance. What we see today in terms is material affluence is a distorted version of spiritual apathy and foolhardiness that has only increased agony and a yawning gap between the haves and the have nots.

How should one carry out Mantra Sadhana?

One should perform Mantra Sadhana under a Guru who is free of any kind of malice or outward intentions of attaining more disciples, wealth or inclined towards self-interest. The Guru has to be an epitome of abandon and dispassion.

Any person who is attached only to such a Guru can get the spirit of True Mantra Sadhana; not any one else.

Guru is everything when it comes to Sadhana. Mantra Sadhana considers intention as its driving force. A person pursuing Mantra Sadhana should only keep the deity or the Supreme Absolute as His object of attainment and should consider Guru as non-different from the deity himself.

DEITY

Only under such conditions can the mantra take root in the heart of the mantra practitioner. Mantra Sadhana is to be considered as a living process that is fuelled by intention and Grace of the Guru.

The meaning and the syllables of the mantra is simply a representation of the Guru’s spiritual potency.

There can be no doubt about this. Mantra Sadhana has to be pursued as per the word to word instructions of the Guru. There is no standard process delineated for mantras specifically, although Shastras present a broad outline.

The process is spiritually downloaded in the heart of the Guru from the sage of the mantra and the deity. The Guru, takes the permission from the deity and hands over a sacred process only designed for a specific sadhaka.

The mantra then vibrates as a living entity through the words rendered by the Guru to the sadhaka. When the sadhaka chants the mantra word-to-word as prescribed by the Guru, he enters the spiritual ambit of the mantra.

The doors towards material aspirations are locked, after the sadhaka complies with the instructions of the Guru. This is the living Truth of the Mantra Sadhana process.
